Halloween

My halloween party was pretty fun. I dressed as Marie Curie - I wore an old-timey dress and a glow-inthe dark wig. the theme was supposed to be science. another perosn was "full metal alchemist" (an anime show), another was a "library scientist". two people came together as creation science and intelligent design.

10 people stayed overnight - it didn't beat my record of 11. only one person helped me wash dishes after. foo

my stapler

is there a reason students don't own staplers this semester? people keep handing in multiple page papers that aren't stapled. they seem to think the pages will stay together by sheer force of will. some try to fold the corner, but that doesn't work. a few are smart enough to scrounge papercips, but why don't they then scrounge a stapler too?

zip code

If you ever need to lok up a zip code, the easiest way to do it is with the USPS page. you just put in the street address, town, and state, and it even gives you the zip4, which is more detailed.

garbage

this city has a strange system for garbage. everyone has to buy yellow city trash bags. they come in small and large, and the large ones cost $1 while the small cost 50 cents. then once a week you put them out on the curb, but the trash people only pick up the city trash bags, so if you use normal bags and don't put them inside a city bag they'll just stay there.

recycling's free though. you can get a bin free from the department of public works, or just use any bin you want. then you put the crap in it and they just empty it and leave the bin. so the freeness is an incentive to recycle. I only fill up a trash bag every other week since i live on my own and don't eat that much and i do recycle regularly.

USB thumb drive

I filled up my USB thumb drive. it was only 512 Megs, and since I often put on powerpoint presentations with all the images that just wans't big enough. i think i'm going to go get me a 1 or 2 gig. I like having it all in one place rather than having to fiddle around trying to find the right drive. i have to remember to backup things frequently, or i might run into problems if it fails.

pencils

i think im' more of a fan of mechanical pencils than normal wood pencils. they tend to stay sharper. b ut it's a pain sometimes to find lead, and they're ore expensive to replace when things go worng. but i'm always losing pencil sharpeners too, so i'm not really sure which's worse.

i wonder which's more environmentally sound?

dinner

I'm waiting for my friend/coworker to call me so we can go out to dinner. we and her husband are going to go to a hibachi place where they cook on the table right in front of you. we usually go there for sushi, but we keep meaning to try the hibachi and see how it is. i hope it's good, i'm really hungry. maybe is hould call her. or at least put on socks.

Gadz!

I'd forgotten that Google acquired Blogger. This means that there's a nice template to quickly ad Google Ads to your blog. It's not really set up to put in more than one ad though (and I believe the TOS allows some 3 or 4 ads), so editing the template directly is a better idea if you have a vague idea what you're doing.

I also discovered the referral buttons - that's how Howard Taylor of Schlock Mercenary gets a buck everytime someone installs Firefox. Whee.

Oh, the many ways one can procrastinate when supposed to be doing work...
